What is Liquitex Professional Matte Medium used for?

Liquitex Professional Matte Medium is versatile and primarily used to modify acrylic paints and mediums. It increases the transparency of colors while maintaining the desired matte finish. This can be particularly useful for artists looking to create glazes, extend drying time, or enhance the overall texture of a painting. For instance, if you want to create layered acrylic paintings without intense glossy finishes, this medium is ideal.

How do you use Liquitex Professional Matte Medium?

To use Liquitex Professional Matte Medium, mix it with acrylic paint in a palette or container. A common ratio is one part medium to two parts paint, but you can adjust depending on the desired effect. This method allows you to cover larger areas with a soft, matte appearance, perfect for backgrounds or subtle effects. Artists often use this technique when wanting to achieve smooth transitions or for collage work.

Can Liquitex Professional Matte Medium be used for mixed media projects?

Absolutely! Liquitex Professional Matte Medium is ideal for mixed media projects. It allows smooth blending of various materials together while maintaining a non-reflective look. You can use it to adhere papers, fabrics, or other materials to your canvas. For instance, if you're incorporating photographs or textured elements in your artwork, this medium serves as an excellent adhesive that won't overpower your design.

Is Liquidtex Professional Matte Medium non-toxic?

Yes, Liquitex Professional Matte Medium is non-toxic and safe for artists. This makes it suitable for both amateur and professional use in studio environments. Artists can work comfortably without worrying about harmful chemicals. It’s perfect for educational settings too, allowing students to explore their creativity in a safe manner.

How long does Liquitex Professional Matte Medium take to dry?

The drying time for Liquitex Professional Matte Medium can vary based on environmental conditions, applied thickness, and substrate. Typically, it dries to the touch within 20-30 minutes and fully cures in a few hours. This allows artists to continue layering and building their artwork without long wait times. However, be mindful of humidity as it can extend drying durations.

Can I use Liquitex Professional Matte Medium for varnishing?

Yes, Liquitex Professional Matte Medium can be used as a final varnish option in certain contexts. While it is not a traditional varnish, artists sometimes apply a diluted version over dried acrylics for a smooth finish. This is particularly beneficial for preventing reflections from light sources in display settings, ideal for artwork displayed in galleries or homes.

Does Liquitex Professional Matte Medium change the color of my paint?

Liquitex Professional Matte Medium does not significantly alter the color of your paint; it may, however, reduce the vibrancy due to its matte finish. This is particularly useful for artists who wish to tone down colors or create subtle, muted effects in their work. It's commonly employed in techniques where the depth of color is critical, such as in watercolor-style paintings.

How do I clean my brushes after using Liquitex Professional Matte Medium?

Cleaning brushes after using Liquitex Professional Matte Medium is straightforward. Use warm water and mild soap to thoroughly clean the brushes. Rinse them well to ensure all the medium is removed. It’s best to clean brushes immediately after use to prevent the medium from drying on the bristles, which could make cleaning more challenging later on.

What surfaces can I use Liquitex Professional Matte Medium on?

Liquitex Professional Matte Medium can be applied on various surfaces including canvas, paper, wood, and more. Its versatility makes it a go-to for artists working in different mediums. For example, if you're painting a custom wooden panel, the medium will create a well-bonded surface, allowing for enhanced texture and adhesion of acrylic paints.

About This Item

Looking for a professional-grade painting medium that can take your artwork to the next level? Look no further than Liquitex Professional Matte Fluid Medium in a convenient 128-oz gallon size. With its broad range of acrylic mediums, Liquitex has something for every stage of the painting process. Liquitex Fluid Mediums like this one are designed to reduce the viscosity of heavier paints and gels, enabling them to self-level and produce a smooth, even finish.

The Matte Medium Fluid Painting Medium creates a non-reflecting matte finish when added to acrylic colors, giving your paintings a subdued, sophisticated look. This versatile medium can be used in a variety of ways to modify acrylic paints and enhance their properties. Mix it into any acrylic paint to increase transparency and extend color, or add it to Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish to produce a semi-gloss or satin medium.

Opaque when wet, translucent when dry, this medium can also be used as a temporary fixative over artwork to decrease gloss or shine. For even more creative options, consider using Liquitex Matte Fluid Medium as a transparent ground (size) with excellent tooth and adhesion instead of gesso. This will allow the color and texture of the support to show through.

And for exterior murals, a coat of Matte Medium can be brushed or sprayed onto the surface prior to applying a gesso to ensure optimal adhesion.
