His conclusions are frequently controversial, but his larger argument remains forceful: progress is meaningless unless we know what human life ought to become.In Heretics, Chesterton confronts the writers, philosophers, and social theories that shaped the early twentieth century. He takes aim at pessimism, materialism, Social Darwinism, relativism, and the cult of progress while insisting that every opinion rests upon a deeper philosophy of life. Combative, comic, and intellectually restless, the essays laid the groundwork for Orthodoxy and established Chesterton as one of the most distinctive religious and cultural critics of his generation.
